- Discourse means a formal discussion of a subject while synchrony means simultaneous occurrence. The discourses of synchrony investigates the simultaneous occurrence of types of musical aspects that can occur during jazz performances.
- Rhythm is a patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like. Rhythm is the pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the occurrence of strong and weak melodic and harmonic beats. Beats are the metrical divisions found in music. A measure in music means the rhythmic element as measured by division into parts of equal time value.
- The meter is the unit of measurement found in the rhythmic element of music as measured by division into parts of equal time value in terms of the number of beats, adopted for a given piece of music, according to Dictionary.com.
