Discussion[edit]
Introduction[edit]
Jazz has had many phases of development throughout its history. These phases include development of numerous styles or sub-genres of jazz including Dixieland, trad jazz, big band swing, cool, modal, Bebop, hard bop, soul, free jazz, jazz/rock fusion, smooth, and even hip-hop and beyond. Jazz musicians are expected to know many jazz standards and have the skills to play jazz at a high level of performance and expertise. The question before us in 2022 is whether or not there currently exists any jazz tradition that musicians currently follow and support.
What is a tradition?[edit]
Does jazz currently have any jazz traditions that are being followed?[edit]
