JPIC2019 Description
JPIC 2019 April 12-14, 2019
☞ The Jazz & Philosophy Intermodal Conference (JPIC) is an academic conference investigating philosophical issues concerning jazz. See the relevant websites: JPIC at http://jpic.fm and PhilosophyOfJazz.net at http://poj.fm .
☞ OCC emeritus (retired 2015) professor, and former chair of OCC Philosophy, Dr. David C. Ring is co-directing the organization of JPIC 2019 with Dr. Charles Otwell, current chair of the OCC Philosophy & Humanities departments. The conference is free to attend and open to OCC students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
☞ The 2019 conference is supported by and has active participation from three academic departments at OCC: Philosophy, Music, and Dance. All department deans, chairs, and numerous faculty, both full-time and adjunct (up to 15) of these programs are on board and actively involved.
☞ In 2017, the inaugural JPIC conference took place at La Posada Hotel & Gardens in Winslow, AZ on May 5-7. One can see the website for this conference at http://jpic.fm .
☞ JPIC 2019 has a special jazz and dance panel on Saturday afternoon (2-5 pm) chaired by one of the pre-eminent philosophers in the philosophy of dance field, Dr. Aili Bresnahan, from the University of Dayton in Ohio, who is presenting along with her co-panelist, Dr. Renee Conroy, of Purdue University Northwest. They will be discussing philosophical issues relating to jazz dance and jazz tap dancing including demonstrations by OCC students and faculty. OCC music professor, Jose Costas, is helping to organize the jazz dance demonstrations, as well as OCC tap professor Linda Sohl Ellison, who may demonstrate tap.
☞ JPIC 2019 has requested participation from the OCC Philosophy club.
☞ Jeff Jarvis, marvelous jazz trumpeter and Director of Jazz Studies at Long Beach State, has agreed to play Saturday night working with musical Director for JPIC 2019, OCC Philosophy & Humanities chair, Dr. Charles Otwell, and OCC music faculty Paul Navidad, adjunct music faculty guitarist, Dave Murdy, OCC trombonist (and bassist) Professor Dana Wheaton.
☞ Dr. Paul Rinzler, keynote speaker at JPIC 2017, and Director of Jazz Studies at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, plans on attending JPIC 2019, as well as playing piano during the Saturday night jam session.
