Are there any inherent values in jazz and what are they?
Discussion[edit]
The meaning of inherent[edit]
Inherent means intrinsic and embodied naturally. So, inherent values are ones intrinsic to jazz by its nature. If one were to lose these values, by definition, if inherent, then one would no longer have jazz.
Intrinsic Values of Jazz[edit]
What values have people thought intrinsic to jazz?
Paul Rinzler in his The Contradictions of Jazz (2008) holds there are four pairs of opposing values inherent to jazz. These four pairs of values are: (1) individualism and interconnectedness, (2) assertion and openness, (3) freedom and responsibility, and (4) creativity and tradition. It is alleged that these eight values speak volumes about the meaning of jazz and its significance.
